Local Area Networks
LANs connect computers and

Wide Area Networks
Organizations with multiple
buildings use WANs to keep all the buildings connected. Network system
technicians are involved in the installation of network hardware and software
in the form of routers to enable enterprise-wide data communication,
establishing an organization’s Intranet. Network system technicians work with
telecommunication companies to make sure the WAN service meets the
organization’s needs, and to confirm service providers can support all
locations. Building locations that need to be connected with a WAN might be
within a single region or spread across the globe, depending on the
organization's geographic footprint.
Network Management
A network system technician relies
on management software, referred to as a network management system, to monitor
the network's performance. Similar to an air traffic controller seeing visual
representations of planes arriving at and departing from an airport, the
network management system shows the application traffic traveling over the
network. A network system technician uses this tool to understand how
applications are performing based on characteristics reflecting conditions such
as green, yellow or red. A red condition indicates something is down and
immediate action is necessary. This system is also used to assess factors such
as bandwidth utilization to support capacity planning and change management.
Problem Solving
When problems occur with the
network, the technician needs to take action. Problems can involve a computer
not being able to connect to the network or more serious events affecting a
single segment or the entire network. To identify the problem and the level of
severity, the technician will refer to documentation depicting the design and
standards in place, the management system tools and protocol analysis software.
Based on the scope and nature of the problem, the technician may need to
collaborate with colleagues or vendors to determine the best resolution.

Electrical engineering
Electrical engineering is a field of
engineering that generally deals with the study and application of electricity,

occupation in the later half of the 19th century after commercialization of the
electric telegraph, the telephone, and electric power distribution and use.
